Itinerary

DAY 1: Full Day Trip To Majes Toro Muerto Petroglyphs

This is a full day tour to the historical attractions in the Majes District. We will pick you up from your hotel at 6AM and drive approximately 2.5 hours to the Toro Muerto Petroglyphs in Majes. The Toro Muerto Petroglyphs are carved into large volcanic boulders concentrated in a 5 square kilometer area of desert. This dense collection of large volcanic rocks is most likely a result of violent eruptions of the Coropuna and Chachani volcanoes. More than a thousand rocks of all sizes and shapes have been crudely, yet strikingly, engraved with a wide variety of distinct representations. The engravings include images of humans, snakes, llamas, deer, parrots, sun discs and simple geometric motifs. Some of the figures appear to be dancing and others look like spacemen with large round helmets, obvious potential for Eric Von Daniken`s extraterrestrial musings. The petroglyphs are believed to be 1000 to 1500 years old and are largely attributed to the Wari culture. However, there were probable additions during the subsequent Chuquibamba and Inca periods of domination in the region. After visiting the Toro Muerto Petroglyphs, we will visit pre-Inca tombs and dinosaurs tracks located between Corire and Aplao. In Aplao, we will stop for an optional typical lunch consisting of shrimp dishes. After lunch, we will return to Arequipa on the South Pan American Highway, arriving at approximately 5:30 PM.

Climate:

The area where the Toro Muerto petroglyphs are located has a sunny climate most of the year. The temperature varies from a maximum of 28ºC. up to a minimum of 11ºC. The rains are very scarce.
